Hacks for Handling Everyday Disagreements5
Disagreements are a normal part of getting to know another person. The goal isn’t to eliminate every difference, but to find healthier ways to handle them.

Start with the specific problem.
Instead of bringing up every past frustration, focus on what is happening now. One clear issue is easier to discuss than a long list of complaints.
Use “I” instead of “you” statements.
Saying “I felt ignored when…” can start a very different conversation from “You never listen.”
Take a pause when needed.
If a conversation becomes too emotional, taking some time to calm down can be more productive than continuing while frustrated. The important part is coming back to the conversation later.
Listen before responding.
Try to understand what the other person actually means before preparing your counterargument. You don’t have to agree with someone to understand their perspective.
Look for the solution, not the winner.
A disagreement doesn’t have to produce a winner and a loser. Sometimes the best outcome is simply finding an approach that respects both people’s needs.
Good relationships aren’t free from disagreements. They are built by learning how to move through them with honesty and respect.
